Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded January 16, 1920 on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C by five women we fondly call our Five Founding Pearls.
· Founder Myrtle Tyler Faithful
· Founder Arizona Cleaver Stemons
· Founder Pearl Anna Neal
· Founder Fannie Pettie Watts
· Founder Viola Tyler Goings
These women dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for Black Women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood.
The Sorority was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948): to form adult and youth auxiliary groups, the Amicae, Archonettes, Amicettes, and Pearlettes; and the FIRST and ONLY to be constitutionally bond to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma, Incorporated.
Zeta ‘s national and local programs include the endowment of its National Educational Foundation community outreach services and support of multiple affiliate organizations.
Zeta chapters and auxiliaries have given untotaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change.
Local History of Xi Kappa Zeta Chapter
As Sorors began to move to the Colorado Springs area, they wanted to continue their affiliation with the sisterhood and their commitment to the ideals of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. There quickly became a need to establish a graduate chapter that could bring the activities and programs of Zeta to the Southern portion of Colorado.
Xi Kappa Zeta Chapter was chartered in Colorado Springs, CO on November 17, 1988. The charter members were: Pamela A. Doss, Cynthia D. (Cross) Green, Charlotte “Cherri” Norris, Nadine Thomas, and Karen (Wilson) Freeman. The charter was granted by Grand Basileus Eunice S. Thomas. The chartering ceremony was officiated by the Midwestern Regional Director, Alma Washington, Esq. and the Colorado State Director, Margaret (McCallum) Neal.
Since its establishment, the chapter has made a tremendous impact in the greater Colorado Springs and Pueblo communities through the implementation of the sorority’s national service program- Z-HOPE and the establishment of collaborative partnerships with various community, governmental, and Greek entities.
